LANGUAGES OF BRAZIL

Brazil's official language is Portuguese.  It is spoken by 99% of the population.  Because of the mixed ethnic background, Brazilian Portuguese is a variation of the Portuguese language.  It includes words that are of Indigenous American and African origin.  There are also 180 minority languages spoken throughout the country.  These include German, Italian, and a High Herman language.  Brazilian sign language is descended from the French sign language.
