HISTORY
Europeans first came to Brazil in the early 16th century.
Pedro Alvares Cabrel first colonized Brazil on April 22, 1500. He did this under the sponsorship of Portugal. Brazil remained part of the Portuguese empire from the 16th century to the early 19th century. It ran south along the coast and went west along the Amazon and a few other inland rivers from the original 15 colonies that were on the northeast Atlantic coast. Brazil's borders were finalized by the early 20th century. The country gained it's independence from Portugal on September 7, 1822.
