FARMING IN THE PAST
Brazilians began farming around 12,000 years ago. They farmed cassave, peanuts, tobacco, sweet potatoes, and maize. They also cultivated fruits such as jabuticaba, cashews, spondias mombin, and goiabas.
The Brazilians would burn land for cultivation. They used the ashes as fertilizer and soil cover. Sugar cane was discovered in the northeast region of Brazil. This made the Europeans rich but did very little for Brazil. Sugar cane declined in the 17th century and producers expanded to cotton, tobacco, and cocoa.
