ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS OF AGRICULTURE
In Brazil, the expansion of agriculture seems to be threatening delicate habitats such as the Atlantic Forest, the Cerrado, and the Amazon. The expansion of vegetables, especially soybeans, is very destructive to these areas which, are by no means, invincible.
Cocoa has also been blamed for widespread deforestation in Brazil. During the 1970's, a cocoa boom occured. This was the leading cause of the decline of the Atlantic Forest ecosystem. Now, barely 10% of the ecosystem persists.
In the Cerrado, cattle ranching poses a significant threat. Ranching is linked to the increased soy cultivation. This poses concerns about the impacts on sensitive ecosystems. Chicken and pork production moving into the area has also become a threat.
In the Atlantic Forest, some of the world's most diverse ecosystems are being converted into plantations. There are millions of acres made up of eucalyptus, which is not native to Brazil. Not all of these plantations are certified with the Forest Stewardship Council. Still, there are conflicts with angry people about land rights. 40% of Brazil's bleached pulpis is being exported to Europe.
