RACE/ETHNICITY IN BRAZIL

Brazil is made up of people from several different origins.  These include Native Brazilians, Portuguese Colonizers, black African slaves, and from the recent European, Arab, and Japanese immigration. Brazilian culture continues to promote racial integration and mixing.

During the second half of the 19th and the early 20th centuries, white superiority was a very popular idea.  Africans had been brought to the country and used as slaves for centuries.  On October 23, 1887, there were confrontations between police and rioting blacks in Sao Paulo. Uprisings were also happening in Itu, Campinas, Indaiatuba, and Amparo.  Ten thousand fugitive slaves groupled together in Santos. The fights were in broad daylight and the fugitives were carrying guns.  On May 13th, 1888, slavery was abolished in response to such events.
